  • 7 Combing

This term is used literally and denotes the combing of fibrous materials in sliver form by mechanically actuated combs, or by hand-operated combs. In general, the objects in combing are two, namely (1) to obtain the maximum parallelisation of the fibres, and (2) to remove impurities and undesired short fibres. Combing machines differ considerably in their action on fibres, and in practice the different types of combs are used in somewhat restricted fields. For combing cotton the Nasmith and Heilmann combs are principally used. In the United States of America the Whitin comb is much used. In all three of these machines successive rows of combs are set in cylinders, the material being presented for combing in the form of thin narrow laps, which after combing are formed into a sliver and coiled in a can. For combing wool, four types of comb are in use, namely, the Noble, Lister, Holden and Heilmann. Also see under each name. The combs of the Noble machine are in the form of pins set vertically in one large and two small circles with appropriate mechanism for dabbing the wool into the pins of the combs and means for drawing off the combed wool in a continuous sliver, which is wound into a ball and constitutes the " top " of the worsted trade. The machine has a high production and is suitable for use on a large variety of wools, particularly those of 4-in. to 8-in. staple. The Lister comb is specially suitable for long wools. The combing mechanism includes a gill-box and comb circle. The Holden comb is suitable for wools of 3-in. to 6-in. staple, and of 50's to 70's quality. The Heilmann, also known as the " rectilinear " comb, is used for short wools, say, up to about 2-in. staple, and when used for wool is arranged differently for feed and delivery than for combing cotton. It is becoming of increasing importance for combing short fibred wools for subsequent spinning into fine, full handling hosiery yarns.

  • 8 Wool Combing Machines

Four types of combs are used for combing wool. 1. The Holden circular comb with square motion fallers. 2. The Lister circular nip comb with gill box for long wools. 3. The Noble circular comb, the most generally used machine for combing wool and adaptable for long, medium or fine stapled wools. 4. The rectilinear or Heilmann comb for combing short wools up to about 2-in. staple. (See Combing)

  • 9 Wool Noils

Short fibres abstracted during the process of combing wool. Such material is regarded by the worsted spinner as waste and is sold. It is bought by spinners of woollen yarns and as it is new wool of undamaged though short staple it is a valuable component when suitably blended with other wools, etc.

  • 10 Combing (Dry)

The preparing and combing of wool to which no oil has been added.

Dictionary of the English textile terms > Combing (Dry)

  • 11 Combing In Oil

The preparing and combing of wool to which oil has been added, with the object of controlling the fibres and obtaining an easier passage through the pins of the gill-box and comb. The amount of oil added is 3 per cent maximum.

  • 14 Persian Wool

The wool is usually exported washed and sorted into white and coloured. Khorassan, is the best type, and the spring clip affords a good combing staple, rather finer than a carpet wool. The coloured wool is used for coarse felts. From Bunder Abbas two classes of wool are shipped: " Kurki," and " Meherjun." Bushire wools come from South Persia, and are similar to those from Bussorah, but they are even dirtier and less desirable.

  • 15 Dry Combing

The preparing and combing of wool to which no oil has been added. Said to give better results in the dyed cloth.

  • 16 South American Wool

Three-quarters of South American wool is of a Lincoln character, due to the importation of these sheep for crossing purposes. The Argentine gives the biggest supplies of long, strong, preparing wool suitable for Bradford machinery, while a fair amount of finer cross-bred wool from 48's to 56's quality of a good combing length is grown in the Republic. Argentine wools are subject to " burr " trouble, and this varies in degree according to season. South of the Argentine there is a fair amount of wools of a merino and fine crossbred character, these being chiefly from Chubut, Santa Cruiz, Deseado, etc., but these latter are mostly unattractive and wasty owing to loose soil, often with occasional grey fibres, lacking uniformity in length and diameter, and difficult of estimation from the grease state to the clean equivalent.

  • 17 Carding Wool

The wool that is shorter than combing or worsted quality wools. It has greater felting properties than others with a staple up to 4 in in length. Used for woollens and can also be combed into French yarn. The carding process is a continuation of the opening and mixing of the fibres commenced in the teazer and fearnought machines. Thus carding prepares the fibres for condensing and spinning (see Woollen Carding and Worsted Carding)

  • 18 Fine Delaine Wool

A fine quality of merino wool of 21/2-in. fibre and adapted to combing, used for fine dress fabrics.

  • 19 Robbings Wool

In America a term for waste wool of greater length than noil, removed during combing.

Dictionary of the English textile terms > Robbings Wool

  • 20 Clothing Wool

Wools of short fibre, not suitable for combing, and used in the manufacture of woollens. It possesses the property of felting readily. Usually of the merino type. Formerly these wools were only used for woollens, but now they can be converted into worsted yarns by processing them on the Continental system.
